Solar Projects

From family homes to marae, businesses, farms, and community groups, Solar Options NZ has walked alongside Kiwis to design solar systems that bring independence, savings, and peace of mind. The following case studies share insights into the thousands of solar installations we have guided over our 20+ years in the solar industry, starting with our largest community and multi-site programmes.

Whiti ki te Ora community solar microgrid at Te Karaka

A 600 kW solar array, roughly 1.72 MWh of battery storage and two generators, on Ministry of Education land beside Te Karaka Area School. Designed, supplied and installed by Solar Options as a full EPC contract, and opened in July 2026.

Built after Cyclone Gabrielle left about 500 Te Karaka residents on a hillside for more than 27 hours with no power, food or communications, so the town can now carry its own essential services when the grid goes down.

Solar, battery storage and water for nine marae across Marlborough, Nelson and Golden Bay. 156 kW of solar and 204 kWh of storage, installed across twelve days on site, with a water storage crew working the same sites in parallel.

Every system is three phase and sized to how each place is really used. We came back after the first winter to check every one of them.

Cyclone Gabrielle East Coast NZ

In the aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle, marae from Te Araroa to Muriwai were cut off and isolated for weeks, without power, communication or transport.

Working with Trust Tairāwhiti and local leaders, we delivered fourteen emergency ready energy hubs, each designed for a harsh coastal environment and for the practical needs of the whānau who rely on them.

In the Bay of Plenty, Solar Options NZ successfully guided a local dairy farmer with a large scale solar installation aimed at achieving more consistent and affordable energy for his daily operations.

Together, we crafted a solar and battery system that now powers his milking shed and water pumps with dependable efficiency.

Opononi Solar Project New Zealand

Tucked along the Hokianga Harbour, the Ōpōnoni project reflects what happens when solar design begins with people, place, and whakapapa.

Several whānau living on Māori land asked for support to transition their homes to a fully off-grid system. See how we guided whānau in Opononi on this journey.

It’s a journey we guide you along and walk every step of the way with you on. These briefs below give you a snapshot of what tools are involved in the planning depending on your needs.

Solar Panels

The starting point of it all. Panels capture the sun’s energy and turn it into electricity. Strong, reliable panels are the foundation of every good solar system.

Solar Hot Water

Use the sun to heat your water directly. Solar hot water systems can cut a big chunk off your power bill while giving your household or marae reliable hot water every day.

Solar Batteries

Store your sunshine for later. Batteries let you keep the energy you’ve generated so you can use it at night, on cloudy days, or during power cuts, giving you real independence.

Solar Water Pumps

Perfect for farms and rural properties. Solar pumps keep water moving for stock, crops, or irrigation without the need for expensive grid connections or diesel fuel.

Solar Controller

The solar converter and controller is the brains of your solar setup. This unit converts the sun’s energy into everyday power for your home or business while safely managing the flow between panels, batteries, and the grid, and built to protect your system.

Generator Connectivity

The best of both worlds. By linking a generator with your solar, you get peace of mind that even in extended bad weather you’ll always have backup power when you need it.
